Certified Slip Cord & Check Chain User Course

The PK Canine Certified Slip Cord & Check Chain User Course is designed to give dog owners and handlers a clear understanding of how slip cords, slip leads and check chains work, and how they can be used safely, responsibly and effectively as training and communication tools.

Throughout the course, you will learn about the different types of equipment and terminology, including slip cords, garrottes, slip leads and check chains. You will explore equipment anatomy, correct fitting, handling techniques and the principles of pressure and release that underpin their use.

The course progresses from understanding and fitting the equipment through to conditioning the dog to pressure, developing loose-lead walking and applying the techniques in real-world situations. You will also learn how to recognise incorrect use, troubleshoot common training problems, identify signs of stress or discomfort, and make appropriate decisions based on the individual dog.

The course covers:

• Slip cords, slip leads, garrottes and check chains
• Equipment anatomy, materials and selection
• Correct fitting and the P vs Q principle
• Learning theory behind pressure and release
• Conditioning a dog to understand lead pressure
• Correct handler mechanics and lead management
• Developing loose-lead walking and heelwork
• Introducing distractions and real-world environments
• Recognising and preventing incorrect equipment use
• Troubleshooting pulling, lunging, excitement and fearful responses
• Safety, risk management, ethics and canine welfare
• Practical exercises and knowledge assessments

This course does not teach the use of these tools simply as a means of physically controlling or correcting a dog. The emphasis throughout is on understanding how the equipment works, teaching the dog what pressure means, recognising the importance of release, and developing clear communication between dog and handler.

On successful completion of all required learning activities and assessments, learners will receive a PK Canine Certificate of Completion for the Certified Slip Cord & Check Chain User Course.
